About our Alumni:
Ellen A. Heitzman, 32, of Park Ridge, fought to educate the public about AIDS and help others who have the disease. Ms. Heitzman died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge of AIDS-related complications. Mr. Heitzman learned four years ago that she was HIV positive, said her father, Robert Heitzman. She got involved with the HIV Coalition, a suburban group that provides food and other resources to residents of Chicago’s suburbs who have AIDS. Later, the HIV Coalition named her Volunteer of the Year for her fundraising and leadership efforts. Ms. Heitzman also lobbied in Washington and Springfield in support of AIDS prevention and education programs, and participated in medical studies on women with AIDS at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. Ms. Heitzman was born in Chicago’s Edison Park neighborhood and her family later moved to Park Ridge. She graduated from Maine South High School, where she played the French horn. She also played the instrument for the choir at her church, Edison Park Lutheran Church in Chicago. She attended University of Kansas for several years. Later, she moved back to Chicago and worked for a marketing company. She traveled across the United States, helping hotels around the country set up various promotions. Even though Mr. Heitzman was ill, she made numerous crossstitches for friends and families. Other survivors include her mother, Della; and two sisters Karen Ammentorp and Krista.
