Lieutenant Christian “Chris” Hug 80

Chris Hug graduated from Maine South High School in June 1980.  After graduating from college, Chris joined the United States Navy.  Upon being commissioned as an Ensign, Chris was accepted to flight training at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, FL.  After completion of primary flight training in the T-43 Mentor, Ensign Hug was then sent to NAS Whiting Field, FL where he underwent helicopter pilot training on the Bell TH-57.  After successful completion of his Naval rotary-wing training, Ensign Hug was designated a Naval Aviator and awarded his Pilot’s Wings.

Chris went on to serve with distinction in various fleet helicopter squadrons and detachments.  Chris was quickly promoted to Lt. Junior Grade, and then to Lieutenant. While based with an East Coast Squadron, Chris was killed in an automobile accident in August, 1993.

Although Chris’ career as a Naval Aviator was cut short by a tragic accident, we should never forget his service to the country, and his courage and dedication to his family, and the United States Navy.

  Ardis Dumalski ('94)

I am not really sure how many of you knew her or how good of friends you were with her, but Ardis Dumalski committed suicide last week. She stood in front of the metra train on Seminary in Park Ridge. I am not quite sure how things could ever get that bad to go that far, but I thought I would let you all know. I grew up with her, so I am in a bit of shock right now.
If you did not know her that well she was sweet and funny and even though we no longer kept in contact I will miss her.
Jennifer Vickery

A 28-year-old Park Ridge woman was struck and killed by a Metra train last week in what police are calling an apparent suicide. The woman, a 1994 graduate of Maine South High School, was struck by a westbound train around 8 p.m. March 24 near the 600 block of North Seminary Avenue. There is no designated railroad crossing at that location.
According to a police investigation, the woman was seen standing on the railroad tracks as the train approached. The engineer sounded the train's horn, but the woman did not respond to it, police said

McLean was 1st 'friend' of MS athletics

FromReturn to Homepage

For those who knew him, Gordon McLean will be most remembered for his laughter and for bringing music to the halls of Maine South High School.

McLean, Maine South's first band director, died Aug. 21 at the age of 81. He had been a fixture at Maine South from the time it opened its doors in 1964 to his retirement in 1992.

In addition to his position as band director for 28 years, McLean served as chairman of the Fine Arts Department.

In 1999, seven years after his retirement, McLean was the first person inducted into the Maine South Athletic Hall of Fame as a "friend" of athletics, for his work with the marching band.

"One of the things I loved about Gordy was he wanted music to be part of all our athletic competition," said former colleague Mike Deines.

McLean performed with the North Shore Concert Band for 22 years. He was most recently recognized as an emeritus member.

"In my mind he's one of the top ten staff members that I came to know at Maine South," Deines said. "He's a special friend we will all miss, but we'll keep hearing his laugh throughout the halls for a long time."

A scholarship fund has been set up in McLean's name at Maine South, and memorials can be sent to the Maine South Music Dept., 1111 S. Dee Rd., Park Ridge, IL 60068; or Edison Park Lutheran Church, 6626 N. Oliphant, Chicago, 60631.
