Ardis Dumalski ('94)
I am not really sure how many of
you knew her or how good of friends you were with her, but
Ardis Dumalski committed suicide last week. She stood in front
of the metra train on Seminary in Park Ridge. I am not quite
sure how things could ever get that bad to go that far, but I
thought I would let you all know. I grew up with her, so I am
in a bit of shock right now.
A 28-year-old Park Ridge woman was struck and killed by a
Metra train last week in what police are calling an apparent
suicide. The woman, a 1994 graduate of Maine South High
School, was struck by a westbound train around 8 p.m. March 24
near the 600 block of North Seminary Avenue. There is no
designated railroad crossing at that location. |

APRIL
PAHL
Date of passing: May 15, 1999
April
lost her courageous battle with cancer in the company of her
husband of twenty years, Ian, daughters, Ursula and
Emma, her mother, and sisters Leslie and Michelle. After
Maine South she went to the University of Illinois-Champaigne-Urbana,
where she received a BFA and an MFA. She met her English
husband there, also in the MFA program, and together they
moved to the nascient TriBeCA in 1979, where they were loft
pioneers. With Ursula and Emma in tow, they bought a house
in Woodstock in 1987. April lived there very happily until
the end, riding her horse Sharkey and planting a huge and
elaborate garden that would be her legacy. She is greatly
missed.

McLean was 1st 'friend' of MS athletics For those who knew him, Gordon McLean will be most remembered for his laughter and for bringing music to the halls of Maine South High School. McLean, Maine South's first band director, died Aug. 21 at the age of 81. He had been a fixture at Maine South from the time it opened its doors in 1964 to his retirement in 1992. In addition to his position as band director for 28 years, McLean served as chairman of the Fine Arts Department. In 1999, seven years after his retirement, McLean was the first person inducted into the Maine South Athletic Hall of Fame as a "friend" of athletics, for his work with the marching band. "One of the things I loved about Gordy was he wanted music to be part of all our athletic competition," said former colleague Mike Deines. McLean performed with the North Shore Concert Band for 22 years. He was most recently recognized as an emeritus member. "In my mind he's one of the top ten staff members that I came to know at Maine South," Deines said. "He's a special friend we will all miss, but we'll keep hearing his laugh throughout the halls for a long time." A scholarship fund has been set up in McLean's name at Maine South, and memorials can be sent to the Maine South Music Dept., 1111 S. Dee Rd., Park Ridge, IL 60068; or Edison Park Lutheran Church, 6626 N. Oliphant, Chicago, 60631.
