 Maine South Time & Temp
Olympics 2010
Did
you know Once Again Maine South is represented
in the Winter Olympics?
Nancy
Swider-Pelz Jr. Skated to 9th place in 9000
meter speed skating in Vancouver. Her Mom,
Nancy Swider-Pelz (class of 74) competed in the Olympics also as a
speedskater (1976, 80, 1984, 88) who held the
world record in the 3,000 meters in 1976. She
was elected to the National Speed Skating Hall
of Fame. Both Nancy's competed against
each other as if in a relay hand off from mother
to daughter. While not much was said at
this years Olympics about the duo, they both
manage to keep speed skating a priority.
Mark Greenwald
(class of 1986) was a speedskater who competed
in the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics.
Speaking about
Olympics, Many of us remember Dave Santee (class
of 75) for his Olympic performance in Single
men's figure skating. Dave was a highlight
of the 1978 Olympics performing in Prime Time to
the theme from Rocky! Dave finished 4th
that year just missing a meddle and being taken
away from another American by the name of Scott
Hamilton. It was with a great deal of
pride that we all sat around the TV's watching
our home town favorite. Dave continues to
teach Skating as does Nancy
In the Summer Olympics
Tom Hoff
(class of 1991) is a three–time indoor U.S.
volleyball Olympian (2000, 04, 08). He served as
captain of the 2008 Olympic team which won the
gold medal.

*******************************************Varsity Baseball Wins First Spirit Game Against Varsity Softball Taking a break from the regular competition, the Hawks' baseball and softball teams competed against each other in a fun, school-spirited game of 14-inch mush softball. The boys came out victorious, beating the girls 6-4. A huge turnout of students, faculty, parents, and residents saw such antics as the boys rotating positions after each pitch, a "worm" race from first to second, and plays being made while eating pizza.
Thank you to everyone who was involved in making the first spirit game a success. Maine South Gets new Ball Field The girls Varsity softball team got a new field this year. So in the spirit of competition we decided to have a game between the 2 varsity teams. We are thinking about using it as a Charity event for the community next year but we wanted to see how it was received. We made it a 14 inch mush softball game so that no one would get hurt. It turned into a softball game version of the Harlem Globetrotters. The antics put on by the baseball team made it a lot of fun. We had a professional announcer, Nick Mitrovich (I am not sure I spelled it right) but he is also a MS Alum. He had great jokes about the players and ran trivia contests during the game. Both foul lines were filled with lower level players, parents, coaches from other teams and people from the community. It truly was a sign for school school spirit. We hope to keep it going every year as an annual Event.
